Hampton Roads Ultrasound Academy presents
Build a repeatable approach to leg and arm venous imaging—with guided compression, Doppler practice, and direct feedback on the images you acquire.
Upper & lower extremitiesHands-on scanningChesapeake, Virginia
Workshop description
This instructor-guided weekend develops a practical foundation in lower- and upper-extremity venous ultrasound, with an emphasis on image acquisition and thrombus assessment.
Work from vascular landmarks to a consistent compression sequence, then add color and spectral Doppler. Supervised scanning on live models builds acquisition skills; curated cases introduce abnormal findings, common mimics, and technically limited examinations.
The course explains how a focused bedside assessment differs from the coverage required for a comprehensive venous duplex examination, helping learners describe what they examined and what remains unanswered.
Core curriculum
Six connected modules take learners from machine setup and anatomy to integrated leg and arm scanning.
Probe selection, vascular presets, orientation, patient positioning, venous landmarks, and the clinical question behind the examination.
Proximal venous landmarks, transverse compression technique, continuous coverage, positioning, and common acquisition errors.
Scale, gain, wall filter, sample placement, waveform acquisition, respiratory variation, and troubleshooting weak or absent signals.
Calf-vein identification, expanded examination coverage, thrombus patterns, post-thrombotic change, and common mimics.
Arm and neck venous anatomy, accessible compression sites, central-vein Doppler, bilateral comparison, and catheter-related cases.
Image labeling, examination extent, positive and limited studies, case interpretation, urgent communication, and practical assessment.
The workshop focuses on venous thrombus assessment. Venous reflux mapping, dialysis access, surgical vein mapping, and ultrasound-guided vascular access require separate training and protocols.
The weekend
Begin with landmarks and compression, build toward complete leg and arm examinations, then bring the pieces together through cases and assessment.
Planned Friday–Sunday format · Calendar dates to be announcedEstablish the clinical question, identify key venous landmarks, and build a reproducible proximal scanning sequence.
Expand coverage to the calf, review thrombus patterns and mimics, and develop an approach to arm and central venous assessment.
Apply the workflow during integrated leg and arm scanning, case interpretation, and individual skills review.
The learning experience
Build acquisition skills, review your images, and identify the next steps in your training.
Who should attend
Physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners seeking a structured introduction to focused venous ultrasound and its limits.
Imaging professionals and students seeking guided repetition in venous anatomy, compression, Doppler, and image documentation.
Participants with previous ultrasound exposure who want instructor feedback and a more consistent leg and arm scanning sequence.

Yes. The curriculum includes lower-extremity anatomy and compression, whole-leg and calf coverage, upper-extremity duplex, and central-vein Doppler assessment.
The workshop explains the scope of limited bedside venous assessment and the additional coverage and documentation used in comprehensive venous duplex. Learners practice stating the extent and limitations of an examination.
Foundational probe handling and machine controls are reviewed. Contact HRU before registering to discuss your background and whether the workshop matches your learning needs.
The core course focuses on thrombus assessment in the upper and lower extremities. Reflux mapping, dialysis access, surgical vein mapping, and ultrasound-guided vascular access are separate training topics.
Course completion documents supervised training and assessment. It does not confer professional certification, credentials, or clinical privileges. Ongoing supervised practice and image review remain part of skill development.
CME or CE credit availability has not been confirmed for this workshop. Please ask HRU for current information before registering.
